Kamp Kirksey

chapel under constructionThe newest addition to our Kamp Kirksey ministry is the Wilson Chapel that celebrates the life and gifts of Rev. Frederick Wilson.  We celebrated the dedication of Wilson Chapel on September 19, 2004.

Kamp Kirksey is our 16 acre retreat located 5 miles northeast of Albany off Georgia 300. Follow along with great photos here.  The concept and mission of Kamp Kirksey is to provide clean, well maintained, and financially self-supporting grounds and facilities for the activities and ministries of First United Methodist Church, and other groups of people who exemplify Christian principles and ideals, and whose purpose it is to serve and minister to the needs of our community.

Located on the grounds of Kamp Kirksey is the J.B. Hawthorne Dining Hall which is equipped with a full commercial kitchen, a fireplace, seating for 180, a piano and organ. Built in 1983, the dining hall is named for the late J.B. Hawthorne, who as a trustee of First United Methodist Church, was instrumental in the development of the campground.

After the death of his beloved sister, Janey, The Rev. Walter Flint donated funds designated for construction of an overnight facility to be named for her. As were all other structures at the camp, the Janey Flint Lodge was built by members and friends of First United Methodist Church. After the flood of 1994, thousands of flood relief workers stayed in the facility as it was being built. Many of them assisted in the construction effort . The result is a beautiful facility which will sleep a total of 60 people dormitory style. The female and male sides each have large, modern bathroom facilities. There are also 4 private rooms which each have two twin beds and a private bath. There is a lovely room in the center of the facility with comfortable sofas and chairs, and plenty of room for lounging.

If "real" camping is more your style, there are seven sites for recreational vehicles, four of which have hook-ups. There is a bathhouse located in the center of the campground.

Whether you're fishing in the catfish pond, relaxing in a rocking chair on the front porch of the lodge, playing on the swing set under the Georgia pines, shooting hoops, practicing your tennis swing, playing softball, volleyball or horseshoes, there is something for everyone at Kamp Kirksey.
